Bharat Biotech Unveils ‘Biolumpivaxin’ — A New Vaccine to Combat Lumpy Skin Disease in Cattle

Hyderabad, India:
In a significant boost to India’s fight against animal diseases, Bharat Biotech has launched Biolumpivaxin, a newly developed vaccine aimed at tackling Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), a highly contagious viral infection affecting cattle.

The vaccine, introduced on Thursday, marks a major milestone in veterinary health, particularly for India’s vast livestock sector which has faced recurring outbreaks of LSD over the past few years. Biolumpivaxin is being positioned as a preventive tool to protect cattle from the painful and sometimes fatal disease that has disrupted dairy and livestock farming in several states.

Dr. Krishna Ella, Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Biotech, expressed pride in the team’s efforts, saying, “Biolumpivaxin is a result of extensive research and collaboration with leading veterinary scientists in the country. Our goal was clear—to create a safe, effective, and affordable vaccine that could support farmers and safeguard the livestock economy.”

Lumpy Skin Disease, caused by the capripoxvirus, leads to skin nodules, fever, loss of appetite, and a drastic drop in milk production. The disease has impacted thousands of cattle in recent years, particularly in northern and western India. While the mortality rate is low, the economic and emotional toll on farmers is substantial.

Bharat Biotech’s vaccine has undergone rigorous testing and has been shown to trigger strong immunity in cattle with minimal side effects. Veterinary experts say that timely vaccination can play a crucial role in controlling the spread of the disease, especially ahead of the monsoon season when viral infections tend to spike.

Animal husbandry departments across several states have welcomed the launch and are now exploring large-scale procurement and rollout of the vaccine in vulnerable districts. According to early estimates, Biolumpivaxin is expected to be made available at affordable prices to ensure widespread adoption among small and marginal farmers.

This move aligns with the government’s broader strategy to strengthen animal health infrastructure and reduce losses in the livestock sector, which plays a critical role in India’s rural economy.

“With Biolumpivaxin, we’re not just offering a vaccine—we’re offering hope to millions of farmers whose livelihoods depend on healthy cattle,” Dr. Ella said.

The vaccine is set to be available through state-run veterinary services and licensed distributors in the coming weeks.
