Ceasefire Under Strain: Explosions Reported in Srinagar Moments After India-Pakistan Truce

New Delhi, May 10, 2025 — Tensions remained high in Jammu and Kashmir even as India and Pakistan announced a sudden and sweeping ceasefire agreement, brokered with U.S. involvement. The ceasefire, effective from 5 p.m. today, aims to halt all military actions by land, air, and sea.

The decision was made following a direct phone conversation between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan at 3:35 p.m., according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Misri said both sides had issued immediate orders to implement the ceasefire and would hold follow-up talks on May 12 at noon.

Calling the move a “crucial step toward peace and stability,” Misri credited international diplomacy for helping to de-escalate what had become a dangerous standoff.

However, shortly after the truce came into effect, loud explosions were heard in Srinagar, raising fresh doubts about the ground-level enforcement of the ceasefire. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah voiced his alarm. “This is no ceasefire. The air defence units in the middle of Srinagar just opened,” he stated, casting a shadow over the announcement.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has convened a high-level emergency meeting to review the evolving situation.
The Congress party has urged the Prime Minister to hold an all-party meeting to ensure transparency and political consensus in handling the developments.
