COVID-19 Makes a Comeback: 257 Active Cases and 2 Deaths in Mumbai – What You Need to Know About the JN.1 Variant

COVID-19 is once again making headlines in India, with a noticeable rise in new cases across several states. As of now, there are 257 active infections reported across the country. Most of these cases are mild, but health experts are keeping a close watch, especially as new Omicron sub-variants like JN.1, LF.7, and NB.1.8 are driving this latest surge.

Kerala has seen the highest number of new cases since May 12, reporting 69 infections, followed by Maharashtra with 44 and Tamil Nadu with 34. Other states like Karnataka, Gujarat, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Sikkim have also recorded a few cases.

In Mumbai, two COVID-related deaths were recently reported at King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital. One was a 14-year-old child who had kidney failure due to a serious underlying condition called nephrotic syndrome. The other was a 54-year-old cancer patient. Doctors have confirmed that both individuals had critical health issues, making them more vulnerable to severe illness.

This wave isn’t just limited to India. Countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand are also seeing a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases, mainly due to these new Omicron variants. Experts warn that India could face a bigger spike if immunity continues to decline in the population over time.

Just a few days ago, on May 19, the Ministry of Health reported only 93 active cases. The jump to 257 cases now shows how quickly things can change.

What Are the Symptoms of the JN.1 Variant?

The symptoms linked to the JN.1 variant are quite similar to earlier Omicron strains. If you notice any of the following signs, it’s worth paying attention:

Sore throat
Fever
Runny or stuffy nose
Dry cough
Headache
Fatigue
Loss of smell or taste

Some people have also reported feeling more exhausted than in previous COVID waves. The good news is that most cases are mild and can be managed at home with rest and fluids. Still, the severity can vary depending on your age, immunity, and any pre-existing health conditions.

As always, staying informed, being cautious, and seeking medical help if symptoms worsen can go a long way in protecting yourself and others.
