In the last few weeks, multiple reports of drone activity and movement of suspected infiltrators near the International Border (IB) have prompted the Border Security Force (BSF) to tighten vigil. Despite no major violation being recorded officially, the troops are leaving nothing to chance.
“Though the ceasefire is technically intact, the threat hasn’t diminished,” said a senior BSF officer on condition of anonymity. “We have detected unusual activity in some sectors, particularly during the night, and are continuously monitoring the situation with enhanced surveillance and quick reaction teams on standby.”
Local villagers living close to the border fences in areas like Arnia and R.S. Pura have also expressed unease. “We haven’t heard gunfire in a while, which is a relief, but the heavy movement of security personnel and patrols reminds us that peace is fragile,” said Mohan Lal, a resident of a border hamlet near Arnia.
Security experts say that while the 2021 reaffirmation of the ceasefire understanding between India and Pakistan led to a welcome drop in cross-border firing, the possibility of infiltration and use of drones for smuggling weapons and narcotics has become a new challenge.
“There’s been a shift in the threat pattern,” explained Colonel (Retd.) R.K. Sharma, a defense analyst based in Jammu. “The focus is no longer just on cross-border shelling but also on covert tactics like drone surveillance, which makes it difficult to rely solely on ceasefire agreements.”
In response, the BSF has deployed advanced monitoring equipment, including night vision devices, thermal imagers, and anti-drone systems.
