India Strikes Back After Pakistan Breaches Fresh Ceasefire: MEA Condemns ‘Unprovoked Aggression’

Key Highlights:

  • Pakistan violated a newly agreed ceasefire within hours of its announcement.
  • India launched Operation Sindoor in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack.
  • Multiple regions in northern India experienced blackouts amid rising tensions.
  • Pakistan PM labels Indian strikes as “act of war,” sparking fears of escalation.

Tensions along the India-Pakistan border surged late Saturday after Pakistan reportedly broke a ceasefire agreement reached just hours earlier. In a press briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that Indian security forces had already responded to the breach and would continue to act decisively against any future provocations. Describing the violations as “extremely condemnable,” Misri held Pakistan fully responsible for the renewed hostilities.

The fragile ceasefire, agreed upon by the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) from both countries, was intended to halt all military activity by land, air, and sea starting at 5:00 pm IST. However, by nightfall, gunfire was reported from the Pakistani side near Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir, along with drone activity near the border. In response, Indian troops have been placed on high alert, with clear directives to retaliate firmly to any further aggression.

This spike in cross-border friction follows India’s launch of Operation Sindoor on May 7, a targeted military action in response to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. The operation focused on key terror hubs linked to groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen, striking locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) while deliberately avoiding Pakistani military facilities to avoid full-scale escalation.

The situation has also triggered precautionary blackouts across border regions including Jammu, Rajasthan, Punjab, and parts of Haryana, amid fears of aerial retaliation. Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned India’s actions as an “act of war” and pledged a strong response. The international community is closely watching the unfolding developments, with U.S. President Donald Trump expressing concern and offering to mediate in hopes of easing the crisis.
