Amid escalating tensions following a recent Pakistani drone and missile assault on Indian cities in Jammu, Punjab, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, the Indian government has temporarily suspended civil flight operations at 24 airports. The Ministry of Civil Aviation confirmed the closures on Thursday evening, citing strategic and security considerations, especially in regions near the international border.

Although no official timeline for the reopening has been provided, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has directed all airports and airlines to implement stringent security protocols. These measures include thorough vehicle screenings, mandatory ID verification at terminal entrances, random luggage inspections, and a ban on visitors inside terminal buildings. Additionally, all passengers must undergo Secondary Ladder Point Checks (SLPC) before boarding, and Air Marshals will be deployed as necessary.

In response, major Indian carriers such as Air India, Akasa Air, and IndiGo have issued travel advisories urging passengers to arrive at airports well in advance—some recommending at least three hours before departure. Airlines have also updated baggage rules, restricting carry-ons to one handbag not exceeding 7 kg.

The move comes in the wake of a terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which further intensified an already volatile situation. “Our actions were retaliatory, not escalatory. The next step lies with Pakistan,” stated Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri during a press briefing.

The security lockdown is also affecting daily life across several states, with schools closed, police leaves canceled, and blackout orders enforced in sensitive border districts. Aviation and national security agencies continue to coordinate closely to safeguard civil infrastructure and ensure passenger safety during this period of uncertainty.
