Key Highlights:
- IPL resumes on May 17 after a week-long suspension due to India-Pakistan tensions
- Final moved to June 3, extending tournament by three days
- Six cities to host remaining league matches, with play-off venues still under discussion
- Foreign player availability in doubt amid international commitments
The Indian Premier League 2025 is set to resume on May 17, following a temporary suspension due to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the new dates on Monday, extending the tournament by three days, with the final now scheduled for June 3.
The league will restart in Bengaluru, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru take on Kolkata Knight Riders. The action then shifts to Jaipur and Delhi for a Sunday double-header, followed by matches in Lucknow, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai over the next two weeks. Notably, Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals, which was abandoned mid-way on May 8, will now be played on May 24 in Jaipur.
While the original plan included cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata for the remaining games, these venues have been excluded from the league stages due to logistical and weather-related concerns. However, sources suggest Hyderabad and Kolkata could still host playoff games, depending on final decisions by the board.
One major challenge facing franchises is the uncertain availability of overseas players, many of whom had returned home during the suspension. Australian stars Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc may skip the remainder of the season due to injuries and their preparation for the World Test Championship final against South Africa, starting June 11.
The playoffs will begin with Qualifier 1 on May 29, followed by the Eliminator on May 30, Qualifier 2 on June 1, and the grand finale on June 3, with venues yet to be finalized — though Ahmedabad is a strong contender.
