Neeraj Chopra Breaks 90m Barrier, Sets National Record, Finishes Second in Doha Diamond League

Doha, May 16, 2025 — In a moment that will go down in Indian athletics history, Neeraj Chopra crossed the 90-meter mark in the men’s javelin throw for the first time, recording a spectacular 90.23m effort at the Doha Diamond League. Despite this historic achievement, Chopra had to settle for a second-place finish, as Germany’s Julian Weber edged him out with a remarkable 91.06m throw.

Chopra, already an Olympic and World Champion, had come close to breaching the 90m mark several times in recent years. His previous best of 89.94m, achieved in Stockholm in 2022, stood as the national record until his third attempt in Doha, when he rewrote the record books.

The 26-year-old began his campaign with a solid 88.44m, followed by a foul on his second try. It was his third attempt that made history—his javelin slicing cleanly through the air before landing at 90.23m. The crowd erupted in celebration, and social media in India lit up in pride as the country’s golden boy finally broke through one of athletics’ most iconic milestones.

The throw was not just a personal best but a symbolic breakthrough. Crossing the 90m threshold places Chopra among an elite group of global javelin stars, including Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan.

The influence of Chopra’s new coach, legendary Czech thrower Jan Železný, was evident in his performance. Železný, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, replaced long-time coach Dr. Klaus Bartonietz earlier this year.

Although Chopra did not win the event, his performance solidified his position among the sport’s all-time greats. The historic night in Doha marked a new chapter in Indian athletics, proving that Chopra continues to push boundaries and inspire millions.
