Umpires Randomly Checking Bats in IPL 2025: Here’s What’s Behind the Move

Jaipur, April 14, 2025 — In an unexpected move this IPL season, on-field umpires have begun randomly checking players’ bats during matches, sparking curiosity among fans and players alike. The checks are part of a new protocol implemented by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) aimed at maintaining fairness in the game, especially in an era marked by aggressive, power-heavy batting.

On Sunday, during the match in Jaipur, bats belonging to Rajasthan Royals’ Shimron Hetmyer and Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Phil Salt were inspected. Later in the evening game between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians, MI skipper Hardik Pandya’s bat was also examined thoroughly by the officials.

Despite the interruptions, the checks were brief and caused no delay in proceedings or changes in equipment. According to BCCI, the inspections are intended to ensure that no illegal modifications are made to bats which could offer players an undue advantage.

A BCCI official clarified, “The checks are standard protocol and are meant to uphold the integrity of the sport. With the increasing use of technology and innovation in equipment, we want to be sure no one is gaining an unfair edge.”

As the tournament progresses, it remains to be seen if these bat inspections will become a routine feature in future matches or if they were a temporary enforcement measure. Either way, the move signals a more vigilant stance by cricket authorities in maintaining a level playing field.
