The Indian Premier League 2025 could be back on track soon—but only after the central government gives its approval. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced it will consult with all stakeholders, including government authorities, franchise owners, broadcasters, sponsors, and host state associations, over the next 48 hours to determine a feasible timeline for the league’s return.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia explained that the board is treating the situation with caution and urgency following the recent suspension. “We’re monitoring developments very closely. With five days remaining in the initial suspension period, the next two days will be critical as we gather input and seek the government’s go-ahead,” Saikia said.
The BCCI had suspended the tournament on May 9, following security concerns that led to the abandonment of a game between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala. Despite the disruption, the board remains committed to completing the season, which still has 16 matches—including four crucial playoff games—left on the calendar. Sources indicate that the BCCI is aiming for a 12 to 14-day window later in May to wrap up the season, potentially by scheduling multiple double-headers.
Franchises, for their part, are holding off on recalling their overseas players until there’s more clarity. While many foreign cricketers are believed to be willing to return if the tournament resumes within a week, others who never left India might be asked to stay put. Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan, despite the team’s low ranking, expressed support for completing the tournament. “The IPL is a prestigious event, and we want to cooperate fully with the BCCI. Our players are on standby to return,” he stated.
