Chennai, April 11: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered a major setback as skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out for the remainder of IPL 2025 due to a hairline fracture in his elbow. The injury was sustained during CSK’s recent clash against Rajasthan Royals, further compounding the team’s struggles amid a four-match losing streak.
The news was confirmed by CSK head coach Stephen Fleming during the pre-match press conference ahead of their crucial encounter against Kolkata Knight Riders at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Gaikwad, who had been one of CSK’s key batters this season, was seen as a vital component in the team’s efforts to recover from a disappointing start. His absence will leave a significant void in the squad’s top order.
In a surprising but sentimental turn, former captain MS Dhoni is set to return to the helm. Dhoni, who led CSK to a memorable IPL title win in 2023, will reassume captaincy duties for the remainder of the season. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter had previously stepped aside to allow for a new leadership era, but Gaikwad’s injury has prompted his comeback.
With the season entering a critical phase, CSK fans will be hopeful that Dhoni’s leadership can reignite the team’s playoff aspirations and stabilize a squad shaken by injuries and form issues.
